I have just read this article and it has helped me a lot. We have just got a lovely little rescue dog that has never been trained, so I have to start at the beginning. For a long time when I was training Murphy (our current dog) I felt so guilty when I punished him but as you said, I think a balance of both positive reinforcement and negative punishment is best.
