Pound Statistics 2007

category: Dog Rescue
by Tara,

The statistics are out for 2007. Each year the department of Environment who are responsible for the control of dogs release the figures detailing how many dogs were seized, collected, rehomed and destroyed.

Things to remember:
These figures only represent dogs taken into pounds, they do not include dogs given up to rescue, retired greyhounds (thousands) and dogs handed into vets or put to sleep as unwanted pets in vets.

These dogs come in all shapes and sizes. They are pedigree and mixed breed, large, small and tiny, healthy, suffering from disease and some very ill and abused.

ALL of these dogs need a home. If you cannot give them a home then you can offer help in the form of donations to the various charities who take dogs from the pounds (when the pounds allow the rescues in) or by offering a foster home to a dog until it gets a permanent home or by offering transport to take a dog from a pound to the rescue or foster who has offered it a space. Full details are on these websites:

There are 4 tabs or worksheets.

Finally you can email the department of the environment and request that they take measures in order to DECREASE the destruction rate of dogs in Ireland. They can do this by

1. Implementing the Recommendations of the Working Group on Breeding Establishments
2. Promote Spay and Neuter
3. More funding for rescue centres
4. More protection for our animals in the Animal Welfare Bill
